“Necessity is the mother of invention” - This was certainly the case when clinicians in UK complained that cannulae were often working loose and injection sites were becoming infected as a result. To solve the issue the NHS commissioned designers to come up with a solution. Many trials and several years later, the result was an infusion device that primarily isolated the feeding tube from the cannula by fixing the point of vulnerability to the wrist. It was during early trials that clinicians suggested adding a three-way tap, offering the advantage of multiple ports. The addition of a forced-disposable strap ensured that the device could not be reused and the InterVene Cannulok™ was born.
• Designed to reduce trauma at injection site • Can be supplied with or without swabable needle-free port adapters • Quick and easy to use • ‘Snap’ closure on strap ensures single use • Ergonomic design sits between radius and ulna • Resists rotation even when only loosly fastened • Prominent position allows easy access to ports • For use with cannula in back of hand or in forearm • Requires little modification to current techniques • Complies with ISO standard for deadspace • Development funded in UK by NHS
Cannulok™ is for use with patients undergoing IV drug therapy for antibiotics or other drugs that have to be given on a continual basis. One IV nurse who was asked to review the device recently explained to us, "Cannulok is a much better system for patients in terms of stability and safety than what we currently do for outpatients with saline locks. It provides greater stability with the strap and less tape to secure the site. This decreases skin irritation that can occur with tape (also with tape getting freyed and dirty, it has the increased risk of infection). It allows greater mobility to the patient when in hospital and on IV meds (both adult and ped)."
Cannulok™ can be secured on the wrist or the upper arm.
In an attempt to prevent children from tampering with the integrated 3-way tap and medication lines connecting to the device, the paediatric version of Cannulok™, Mini-Cannulok™ has been created with a cover in the form of an elephant. The trunk of the elephant is formed by the line from the cannula. This product is still in development and undergoing in-house clinical evaluations, but early reaction from paediatric clinicians is a resounding thumbs up!
